Food Innovation Center

The Food Innovation Center is a 178,000 square foot complex serving private/public partnerships. The center provides world-class facilities for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Food Science and Technology Department and private companies in leased space. It features wet/dry lab research space, food grade/non-food grade pilot plant space, a state-of-the-art distance education classroom and office space.

The Food Innovation Center is home to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Food Science and Technology Department. At the forefront of innovation, the department is dedicated to advancing safe, sustainable and healthy food systems through cutting-edge research, dynamic teaching, impactful outreach and engagement. With a strong commitment to trans-disciplinary collaboration, the Food Science and Technology Department prepares the next generation of leaders in the food industry, academia and government. The department's undergraduate students gain hands-on experience in on-campus research laboratories, pilot plants and more. The department also awards hundreds of scholarships annually to support student success. 

The mission of the Food Science and Technology Department is to provide high-quality education and training for careers in food science and technology, while supporting the food industry through impactful research, extension and community engagement. The Food Science and Technology Department is home to two centers and two programs that foster strong, interdisciplinary efforts in research, education and outreach. These include:

  • FARRP (Food Allergy Research and Resource Program): As a global leader in food allergen research, FARRP provides vital resources and analytical services to the food industry, helping ensure food safety for allergic consumers. Learn More >>

  • Gnotobiotic Mouse Program: A program that enables microbiome researchers to ask mechanistic questions about the role of the gut microbiota in health and disease. An associated entity of the Nebraska Food for Heath Center, where the aim is to perform high-quality research studies in a controlled and reproducible environment that researchers can trust.
