This collection features watercolor and gouache works created over the past three years by Lincoln native artist Scott McDonald. The series explores themes of human existence, presenting a striking balance of beauty and symmetry within subject matter that can feel unsettling or uncomfortable.
Through detailed depictions of bodies, hands, and skulls, Scott examines the inevitability of death - an aspect of life he believes should be embraced rather than feared. His work invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions, finding grace and harmony in themes often associated with discomfort. A self-taught watercolor artist, Scott applies techniques influenced by his earlier experience with acrylics, building texture and strong tonal contrasts within each piece. His artistic influences range from classical painters such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Caravaggio to surrealists Zdzisaw Beksinski and Salvador Dal, as well as contemporary artists including Jeremy Geddes and Michael Reedy.
Scott has been employed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 18 years. Over time, his artistic style has evolved from abstract and cartoon-inspired acrylic paintings to his current contemporary and dark surrealist watercolor and gouache series. His work has been displayed locally at Tugboat Gallery, Burkholder Gallery, and the Resonator Gallery. In 2022, he received the Best Newcomer award at the Lincoln Arts Festival and was featured as an emerging artist. Most recently, three of his watercolor pieces were included in Manifest Gallery's 22nd Season AQUACHROME Biennial exhibition.
