Dr. Thomas Hoegemeyer, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will present, "A History of Public Sector Maize Breeding and Genetics" at the Food for Health Seminar Series.
Summary: Maize breeding and pure genetics began as a single field of endeavor. Hybrid breeding and improvement were part of a strategy to escape from the depression and subsequently became a key war effort. The 30 years following WWII were the "heyday" of public breeding efforts, and its success may have ensured its doom.
